According to this link, the VW Golf GTI (1996 2.0i) has a hall sensor on the crank to read the 60-2 wheel. So you can use that instead of the dizzy. Makes for an easier setup since it's known that the 14th tooth (15th if 0 & 1 are the missing teeth) sits under the sensor at TDC. I haven't ...
