Which VW Distibutor?

Ive got a 96 2.0 8v and everyone says use the dizzy setup out of a 90 digifant car. Is this true?So is this a VR type or Hall type?

Its hall type. The difference between it and what you probably have already is the number and size of the slots in the hall rotor.

The 96 2.0L-8v distributor has a hall sensor, and it has a one window trigger wheel and in the stock configuration functions as a cam position sensor, so MS can't it to used to time the spark. In addition to the distributor, the 96 also has a 60-2 trigger wheel on the crankshaft with a vr type crankshaft sensor, the crank sensor is located in the block just to the left of the distributor. The 90 digifant distributor is also a hall sensor type but it has a 4 window trigger wheel and so CAN be used by MS for spark control. The 90 distributor must be modified to fit in the 2.0L block, or alternatively, the 2.0L distributor can be modified to work with MS by installing the digifant trigger wheel in it. So I modified my Distributor and put a 90 style in the 96 2.0(with the four shutter wheel configation). So when I order a MS I tell them Hall type correct? So does anyone have suggest on which MS system to purchase?

Yes you would build it for hall. Even if you buy an assembled kit you will still have to do at least a minor amount of soldering and modification. I mean you have to set jumpers and make a wiring harness. Megasquirt is very DIY oriented.

According to thislink, the VW Golf GTI (1996 2.0i) has a hall sensor on the crank to read the 60-2 wheel. So you can use that instead of the dizzy. Makes for an easier setup since it's known that the 14th tooth (15th if 0 & 1 are the missing teeth) sits under the sensor at TDC. I haven't personally counted 14th tooth at TDC, but a lot of people on other forums mention 14th and it seems to work fine for my configuration.

So Iam still not sure about the different versions of MS is there pros and cons to one or another.?Which one would you suggest for Fuel/Spark?

I am kind of skeptical about that. I know your's is a hall sensor, and the one on that site is, but that site is in the UK and so are you. It may be different in Europe, but everything I have heard, and from what I can see they used VR sensors in the US. I don't even know how it could be a hall sensor due to the fact that there is nothing to create a hall effect. Wouldn't there need to be windows, or something electrical on/around the crankshaft trigger wheel? It doesn't make sense to me, but that is VW for you right? I certainly hope it's not a hall because I built my MS counting on a VR sensor.
