Adding a hall effect sensor

Post by trakkies »

At the moment I'm running fuel only on an MSII V3 DIY. I've modified a spare distributor to lock the advance mechanism, and that distributor has a VR sensor. I'm told a hall effect sensor is a better bet - and can be substituted for the VR one and will trigger off the reluctor toothed ring. If so, which sensor to use? There seem to be a bewildering variety available for not much money from electronics suppliers. But it would be nice to find one ready fitted to a bracket or whatever for easy mounting.

Dave,

You best bet is one already used in an automotive application (rather than something from a electronics supplier). I say that because it will already have suitable mounting provisions, and will be known to work with the number and size of teeth it was designed for, in an autmotive environment (with the heat and vibration and oil, etc.).

Interesting. The MS, of course, uses a generic MAP sensor rather than an automotive specific one. ;-)

Snag is I would like to convert the existing distributor type as I have a spare. Which has a sort of gear with spiky teeth as the trigger wheel for the existing VR sensor. And being Lucas it's unlikely anything else will fit without modification.
Other thing is the cost - something from a car maker or supplier will be several times the price. And of course MS know this as they use a generic MAP sensor rather than an auto specific one. ;-)
I'm leaning towards the Digi-Key 620-1327-1-ND - at only a few pounds could be worth trying?

The 620-1327-1-ND is the same sensor I am using to fabricate a 36-1 trigger.

Thanks for that.

I did in fact order the sensor from Digi-Key on Monday and they (spares too) arrived first thing this morning. Incredible to get across the pond that quick - plenty of UK firms couldn't match them. And a reasonable delivery chrage for such a small order.
