Hi, I am going to use the Ford EDIS ignition on a Ford 460. Will MSD’s crank trigger wheel and sensor work with MS? I looked at MSD’s site but couldn’t find any info on the number of teeth. Sure looks like more than 36. I think it would look classy if it would work.

I have the same question. I will be running an MSD 7AL3 with an MSD crank trigger. There are 4 magnets on the wheel, and one sensor. Does anyone know what ignition this falls under? I assumed under the MSD 6A, but in the diagram, they state that the VR signal wires are not used(off the ignition box). They are stating to send the crank trigger wires to the MS, and from the MS to the ignition box through the white wire.
Has anyone used this? I just don't want to mess anything up, and I don't mind taking my time to make sure everything is right.
Sending your VR wires to MS2, then feeding Pin36 to MSD (white wire) will give Megasquirt full timing control.
If you run the VR straight to MSD then give the tach output (square/Hall input) to MS, MSD will be in control of ignition. Megasquirt uses that tach pulse for the injection cycle.
I'm running MS2 with HEI 7pin and MSD6AL for full timing control. Works great!
Thanks for the reply. So, just to make sure, you installed everything like the manual says, and jumpered VRIN to TACHSELECT, and TSEL to VROUTINV as suggested in step 52.
My main question was because I am changing my engine over to a twin turboed SBC, and I wanted to back the timing off when the boost came on. I wasn't sure if the MS-II would pickup properly on the 4 spinning magnets, everyone is talking about a 60-2 wheel(and i don't know what that is). The setup I have in there now is fixed (MSD crank trigger, and MSD billet distributor) I was hoping to be able to change this with th MS-II, so I could help the mileage down low a little with some degrees.
I don't see why the MSD crank trigger wouldn't work. I was considering running one on my 400 Pontiac but I just don't have the room between water pump pulley & thermos.
Anyhow your distributor turns at 1/2 the speed of the crank so being 4 magnets on the wheel would be no different to running a probillet distributor.
"Flying Magnet" is the key. VR reacts to ferrous materials with its internal magnet (it is passive, and does not require power), whereas the hall is a magnetic field presence sensor (it is active, requiring power).
I'm sure MSD's flying magnet setup does use a VR type pickup not a hall effects,the pickup doesn't contain a magnet this is so that the ignition cannot be false triggered by a bolt, vibration or debris it needs an actual magnetic field to "fly by" to create the signal, the pickup is just a coil.
The only company I can think of that uses an actual hall effects crank trigger is Crane.
the one i have is the msd universal msd trigger and if i remeber right the instrutions say that it is a hall effect and that it uses a ref voltage siganl that comes on one of the two wires.
im at work presently but when i get home ill dig it out and read it over and post up what it says.

Ahh great, and I just switched everything over to hall effect today. lol Well it looks like i have to change it back tomorrow. Man I will be a pro at this soon.
I switched everything back to the VR, and haven't touched it since. I have set it aside while I work on my engine, I find making an intake from scratch is easier for me to do than assemble a MS. I should be getting it running in early spring if everything goes right. I will let you know.
