Ford EDIS-8 Wiring

Can anyone help me figure out where the #7 wire from the 12 pin edis module goes to? The Mega manual states it goes to shield. The number 7 wire from the edis module shows 'shield' on the VR sensor wires,(4&5), and 'shield' on wires 1&3 which are the PIP and SAW,(Spout) wires. What does the shield mean? I know that the wires are shielded due to EMF frequencys and to prevent false signals to other wires, but where do the wires go to? Where do they terminate or what are they configured to? You are correct, Shield is refering to the shield covering the wires. Pin 7 is ground for both the VR sensor wires andt the PIP and SAW wires they go to ground.

Excellent! Thank you Sir! So I can run the pin#7 wire from the Edis-8 module to a ground source, correct? I will use either the battery negative or the engine block. Sound Ok? Thanks again.

The #7 pin on an EDIS 8 is already internally connected to the main earth pin , #10.

So the pin 7 should be used to connect the shield for the PIP/SAW and VR cables , and not to anything else.
The "far" end of the shields shall NOT be connected to earth, just taped off as close to termination point of the
wires as practicable. :mrgreen:

If you somehow connect the pin 7 to earth you will get a ground loop (and may also shunt high currents thru
the shields, a sure way to melt the cables. )

Let me get this straight Heribert, and THANK YOU for helping me. OK I should run the #7 wire alongside the VR sensors wires and the PIP SAW wires and wrap the wires together in metal tape as the factory did? Then terminate the #7 wire instead of grounding it, right? I seem to be more confused now, sorry. :(

I am not sure what kind of shielding you want to use over the PIP/SAW and VR+- wires.
I much prefer ready made shielded cables.
But regardless of what shielding you use:
- the #7 EDIS pin shall ONLY be connected to the two shield
- the two shields shall not contact earth along their length
Hope this is well explained :?:

If you want to make up your own shielding like in the FORD wire looms
make sure that you get a good contact between the shields and the pin 7.

I see. I think I understand now Heribet. The shielded cable that ford used was simply metal wrapped tape, very thin, with a small piece of stranded wire 2" in length that contacted the #7 wire and wrapped up with the VR and PIP/Spout wires. I wondered why they simply left that piece of wire in the wrapped portion of that loom. That small piece of conductor was the shieled ground. Thank you for the explanation. I as usual, was thinking too much into it. One other thing I just thought of, can I buy a piece of shielded cable from diy and install it using that instead of trying to make my own?

We sell shielded single conductor wire, but not something like a shielding kit that would wrap around multiple wires.

Thanks Matt, Heribet! I have another question. I was playing around with the module and relay board today and also noticed the pull connector that Ford uses to place their vehicles into base timng. I tapped the pull 2 wire connector that connects the PIP/Spout wires and pulling the end of the connector breaks the signal wire circuit and the timing goes to 10 BTDC or base timing. But will I need to use these wires? Also I can get that foil tape at Radio Shack, but thanks anyways Matt.,,,,,Eddie

The SPOUT connector can be useful to have, but you could also remove the wire at the relay board screw terminal. Another judgment call there.

Thanks Matt. I'll wire it in series and have the option to either pull the connector or remove the wire from the relay board which would probably be easier. Those connectors can sometimes be a pain to unplug.
