Does the air temp sensor have to be in the intake, or can I put it in the air filter housing? The only hole I have for this in the intake is running the brake booster.

Also, can I use the same sensors for air temp and coolant temp in a V8 GM throttle body engine?

I located mi IAT sensor in the ductwork for the air filter assembly located
in the pass. inner fender. I orig. had it in the air filter housing and it was conducting engine heat being so close to the engine, it would read 130 f
Now, in the plastic duct work, it will read actual outside air temp. and the truck runs much better.

I am also using the same model sensor for IAT, and ECT. Can't remember the part number, but they are for an 86 Monte Carlo SS. LOL

The "correct" way to do it is the Temp I (or IAT, if you prefer) needs to be located in the intake air-stream.

OEMs locate this sensor in the airbox, or in the AFM, or they derive the temp directly from the MAF (Wheatstone Bridge allows direct calculation).

The reason for this is that this helps determine air density, and is an integral part of the 'Ideal Gas Law' equations that drive MS.

You may locate it somewhere else, and it may work for you, but it will not be giving you an accurate picture of intake air temp.

Mine is just swinging loose in the engine bay - not ideal but it works.

Just got to work out a route to get it into the intake whilst remaining 100% waterproof.

Oh, don't use silicone sealant to stick it in - your lambda sensor won't thank you for it!

Just check to see if the silicon is o2 sensor safe, it will tell you on the tube. i used silicone to do mine...[/b]

So I'm MSnSing a Fiat turbo lump and doing away with an airflow meter which included the air temp sensor... but this was located just by the air filter before turbo etc. I guess this works ok for the OEM installation, but if I now measure the air temp there and then stick it through a high boost turbo and a metre or two of ducting, via an intercooler, its not really going to be even closely related to the temp of the air entering the engine (unless by chance the turbo adds the exact same that the intercooler removes at all times... yeah!). So I've gotto move it to somewhere nearer the plenum right?

Yes! After the intercooler (if you have one) but before the throttle body.
