couple of questions

Post by azjulian »

Hi - I've read a bunch of the documentation and have started to pull the pieces together that I need to run MS on my engine, here are my details

current setup is 454, with holley 950CFM carb, MSD 6AL ignition, MSD blaster coil, MSD distributor (no vacuum advance).

I already have an innovate motorsports LM-2 that I have used to tune the carb, so I have a wide band oxygen sensor in, a MAP sensor and RPM pickup, I'm just about to wire up a throttle position sensor.

I plan to (initially) use the carb as a throttle body, find a used TPI manifold.

My question is on the ignition system, I've probably read too much! What do I do with my current distributor and ignition box?

You could leave the MSD distributor controlling the timing curve and have the MS just run fuel. You'd trigger the MS off the MSD tach wire.

Alternatively, you could have the MS control fuel. To do that, lock out the advance mechanism and wire the distributor pickup to the MS using the VR conditioner circuit. Then wire the Megasquirt spark output to the MSD box's white wire to have the Megasquirt trigger the MSD box.

So in the manual - the section on the MSD 6A is refering to hookup for MS to control the ignition curve.... I was confused by the statement in there about not hooking the tach wire to the MS box
