IAT Okay or Not?

Post by PaulO »

My aircooled VW type one is runnning great but I noticed the IAT is up around 115 deg. farenheit. I am measuring the temperature right as the air enters one pair of throttle bodies not in the manifold. I just don't know if this is high or not. Being aircooled, I am concerned that the air in the engine compartment is too hot. Any one have any opinions?
Thanks,
Paul

I've seen liquid cooled engines log higher temps.

That COULD be OK, like Matt implies. If you haven't already done so, check the sealing between the engine sheetmetal and the surrounding engine compartment. If you have any openings that will let air be drawn from below the engine (exaust pipe area) into the engine compartment, your IAT -- and cooling air for the engine -- will be significantly affected.

The engine is in a beck spyder so, there is no seperation between the engine compartment and the underneath as in a bug. I recently created an air intake box to suck outside air into the fan for cooling. I am considering whether or not I need to duct the throttle body intakes into the air box too. Lots of work. That is why I have been looking at the IAT to see if it is necessary. I got those readings around 113-115 and wasn't sure if that was high or not. Thanks for any input.
