holley pro-jection = not happy

I currently run a Holley pro-jection setup on my 308 and its just cr*p. I will be going back to carby directly but am looking at using all the mechanicals from the holley system and controlling them with something better. The projection system is the original 670 cfm 2 barrel analouge hard-to-make-work one and even when its going, doesn't have any self adjusting ability. Is the MS2 a suitable candidate???

I am using the Holley Commander 4 bbl TB with MSII v3 and 2.1.0 Extra code without any problems (that I didn't create myself that is). The Holley hardware, (TPS, IAC and IAT) are all compatible with MS without any modification.

Although I don't have experience with the Pro-Jection ECU, I have read their manual and feel confident that Holley comes up short on tune-ability compared to MS. Not to mention the big $$$$ Holley wants for their unit! Then of course there is the matter of support. Did you ever try to call Holley???? Good luck! You can't beat the support from some really great guys, with tons of experience, right here on this forum. FOR FREE!!!!

IMHO, MS is certainly a "suitable candidate" for almost any DIY EFI project you could think of. Just look around the forums and see some really esoteric installations!

Whatever the case, it's got to beat any carb!

Just my thoughts.

Good luck,

Ken

We've run an MS2 on a Pro-Jection TBI before. Didn't have any real issues.

Think of Converting the Holley "Pro"-jection to MS, like converting a late '80s to early '90s GM truck to MS, basically all the same hardware.

From comparing the Holley hardware to factory service manuals, I'm convinced that the two barrel Holley Pro-Jection is really the OEM TBI that Holley built for Chrysler 318 TBI trucks. The computer's totally different, but the throttle body looks like it was made on the same dies with slightly different machining.

There seems to be some sharing of components between Chryco and GM too, like the IACs. ;)

Chrysler's ECUs are unique, but they outsourced a surprising number of parts to the GM divisions that later got spun off as Delphi - nearly all the wiring connectors, many of the other electronics, power steering pumps, etc.

I was in the same position you are now. I bought a used projection 670 cfm two barrel system from a friend, and while I got it running, the six potentiometers on the ECU box just didn't give enough control over the fuel map to make the engine happy. Using the Holley O2 feedback loop, it would run OK in cruise but wouldn't idle well. It got to the point where I had the Holley ECU on the seat next to me and every time I would stop at a light, I would fiddle with the tuning to get the idle to behave, then set it back once I sped up again. A real pain to say the least.

I kept the throttle body and fuel system, and used everything else from the MS system including the MS wiring harness. Since the throttle body has the TPS and the injector wiring, I either cut and spliced into the Holley wiring to connect to the MS harness, or used GM Weatherpack connector parts from Napa to make the mating connector (like for the TPS). Once everything was wired up and plumbed, I was running and road tuning in one weekend. The MS system is so much better than the Holley system, and is very easy to work with once you get to know it. Overall I've been very happy with using the MS system to run the Holley throttle body, and I will never run a carburator again (if I can help it).

Hope this helps.
