Erratic AFR readings.

I've got MS2 with LC-1 WB installed in my 318 dart and last night on the drive home I was running VEanalyze live from Tunerstudio and I noticed that even though my target AFR was 16something I was consistently getting high 12s and low 13s and VEAL wasn't making any corrections to those cells and never has. My plugs have a light white dusting on them, so it must be running lean most of the time (most of my driving is the 25 miles to and from work on california's freeways). Also, occasionally while I was cruising along at 70mph in OD the AFr would tank and peg the needle to less than 9. I know I need to make sure I'm getting good common grounds and no noise, but I would like to verify one aspect of my install that I've never been able to get an answer on; is it ok to install the 02 sensor at the exhaust crossover that is near the transmission tail housing?
thanks

Curious.......
Is that where you have it installed now?

I have my O2 sensor just after where the pipes from my V-8 join into one. Near the back of the gearbox. It keeps up to heat ok even in the winter. You need to experiment with the EGO delay, though. If it is just a balance pipe things could be different.

I think the exhaust pipes are 2.5" and the exhaust crossover tube is 1.5"?? it is a lot smaller than the main exhaust tubes.

One more question if I may.
This is a dual exhaust, with a crossover in between the main pipes?
My reasoning tells me that you will not get a constant exhaust flow across the sensor with that configuration. You will only see the exhaust that might get passed back and forth between the 2 banks at any particular time.
In that case, you may want to install the sensor in one bank or the other. Such is the case with my car. (two 2 1/2 inch pipes from the header collector all the way back, with no crossover) In my case the sensor bung is installed in one bank just aft of the collector.
If it is like Dave's setup, (ie. 2 pipes into 1) after the Y seems to be the proper place.
