Question: 4 cylinder TBI + boost

Post by specv44 »

Basic rundown:

Looking to be able to control a 1988 2.0L 122ci GM 4 cylinder OHV. TBI fuel (1 injector), speed density, 2 coils controlling spark. Transmission is manual so that is out, but I am looking to be able to turbocharge it as well.

Is there much information about 4 cylinder TBI engines on MS? I havent been able to find anything, yet. Dont need to do much, just need to be able to install a 2 bar MAP and pull timing/adjust fuel.

Thanks!

MegaSquirts come standard with a 2.5 bar MAP sensor. A 4 cylinder TBI motor is by itself no particular challenge. One problem I do see, however, is that GM's single injector TBIs don't have much fuel flow rate as they were designed to provide enough fuel for a 100 hp engine or less. I'd consider swapping on some type of multi-port manifold before going turbo.

If you decide to stay TBI, you will need to bypass or ad an additional FPR, in order to raise fuel pressure in a 1:1 ratio with boost. I don't believe the OEM FPR will do this.

Also depending on which TBI you have, you might be able to either swap in a larger injector from another TBI application and/or make the injector adjustable.
