XJS Timing Pickup

Post by Yodapom »

I am a little way off getting MegaSquirt for my car (Its stuck in Customs).

As background my Jag has both an optical pickup for the coil and a magnetic pickup for the Fuel Injection.

After reading and re-reading the Megamanual I don't see whether I can hook both up at once??? This would let me tell the MSII V3.0 TDC and the current angle.

Obviously the optical spikes 12 times in 720degrees where the magnetic pickup only twice at TDC and 360degrees.

Obviously other Jags have been done so it is possible but Im missing something silly.

Long term is to have a missing tooth pickup and remove the Distributor and Coil in favour of EDIS but Im taking one step at a time.

Any help or direction is appreciated

If your XJS has the same idea as my rover SD1, the magnetic pick-up on the crank pulley has no running function - it is purely a diagnostic device. It can be totally removed and the car still runs normally. On your existing system there is a tach signal feed from the coil to the EFI - and that's now you do it for MS when running fuel only.
When you go EDIS and fit the toothed wheel, it may be possible to utilise the bracket for this device to mount the EDIS trigger on. But I'm not familiar with this engine.

It sounds quite different.

Both the Coil and existing ECU Magnetic pickup are enclosed within the distributor.

The Lucas System uses the magnetic pickup for its ECU which gives only two pulses per 720 degrees.

If it is possible I would prefer to use the optical sensor but Im unsure how to set the TDC Crank Position as no missing teeth?

Im thinking of just keeping the inaccurate magnetic system for now with intention to put a more accurate missing toothed wheel.

what year XJS?
I have just started my 1983 XJS with MS 2.2

I would be interested in other JAG V12 setups.

I have conventional distributor/coil sort of like GM HEI.

My 1978 XJ12L has magnet in rotor for D-Jetronic and another magnetic pick-up for Opus ignition.

MS Seems to work OK through a 10K resistor at coil "-" on the XJS.
