That is how its done for relays, but you would need very hefty diodes to dissipate the heat because of the current involved. Also switching times may affect the operation of the PWM.

A rising rate reg is used when adding a turbo to a non turbo car cheaply. It makes the mixture richer as the pressure increases, adding some safety against detonation.
