HEI versus direct coil

Is there any advantage or disadvantage on the ignition set up? I am currently using a crank trigger and the direct coil method for ignition control. Engine is about a 450hp normally aspirated small block chevy. Any advantage to changing over to an hei distributor and pickup over what I am currently ...

Re: GM HEI and Flying magnet

So my non hei distributor I am running now is used just to distribute spark since I am using direct coil for spark control and a flying magnet to signal it. The distributor has a magnetic pickup in it. Can I just use the magnetic pickup in the distributor to signal megasquirt without having to ...

GM HEI and Flying magnet

Need some clarification. I am currently running magnetic crank trigger wheel to signal megasquirt. This is a flying magnet and not a vr wheel. I want to change to triggering off and hei. Do it need to change anything in the ecu itself as far as configuring goes? Or just change settings. My builder ...

Timing during start up

I have a question with spark timing on start up. I recently converted to spark also after running fuel only for year. The car runs ok but is hard starting. Not sure if I have the initial spark timing set up right. It is not reading any spark advance until the car fires. Cranks a long time and kicks ...

Re: intial advance

distributor is locked. Played a little more tonight. Was able to take idle timing down to 27 degrees and still maintain an idle with the air on and get it to idle with an afr of around 13.2. Reduced the timing advance at low rpm up to about 2,500. if you stab the throttle, the afr goes lean to about ...

Re: intial advance

After checking, this is about the same timing it had before I converted to ignition control. I have 14 degrees initial and about 12 degrees from the vacuum advance so it had a total of about 26 degrees before conversion. Maybe I am out to lunch but it idles better with more advance. Before, the air ...

intial advance

i finally got ignition control up and running using direct coil on a small block chevy. The motor has been running fuel only for several years. I am planning on a power adder as a winter project so ignition timing will be important. I have tried several spark advance maps and have started tuning. I ...

Re: directo coil ignition issue

Will have to be some more testing but for now the car has been put back to fuel only. Power Tour starts next week so back to the tried and true fuel only mode. Not sure on a lower horsepower normally aspirated engine how much I will gain by converting to computer controlled ignition.

directo coil ignition issue

I have been running MS2 fuel only for a few years with no issue. Now working on ignition. Controller has been wired correctly for direct coil and has the proper full up parts. Works on the sim. When i hook up the ignition wire to the negative side of the coil and run 12v to the positive side I cant ...

Re: ignition output test

I will take it out again to see if I can see any issues. Just a note, mounting it under the dash is a great idea until you install air conditioning and it takes 45 minutes to get it out and longer to put it back in. Is there anything else I can check while it is out again? I have a new coil driver ...

Re: ignition output test

Put it on the stim. The ignition light is on dimly at all times no matter what you have the inputs set on. When you turn up the RPM,the ignition light immediately gets bright. I assume this is correct? Or should the ignition only fire with it sees RPM?

Re: ignition output test

The crank trigger works as the car has been running on fuel only for several years. The coil driver has been installed, It logs rpm when you crank. Do the settings have to be different for the ignition set up when using a crank trigger rather than an HEI? I went with the crank trigger because I was ...

ignition output test

I have been running MS2 fuel only for years. I tried to use the ignition side without success. I am using a crank trigger and trying to drive the coil using the direct coil method, running the ignition directly to the coil. I believe all the jumpers and pull ups are installed correctly. Is there an ...

I have never wished for a car to quit running some much. Doesnt happen. Probably during the next power tour.

Injector bank not firing

I am running MS2 fuel only for now. It has been running pretty well for 4 years. It has started developing a problem with one bank of injectors going dead at idle. I have only noticed it at idle and only if it sits and idles for more than a couple of minutes. If you shut the car off and restart it ...

Re: Spikes and erratic rpm

Switched the sensor grounds to the ecu and the ecu grounds to the battery. Runs good no spikes. CLT is calm as can be. I used to have to run the crank trigger .18 out to get to run and not spike all the time. Had to move the sensor in to about .06 to get it to signal. Such a big improvement now my ...

Re: Spikes and erratic rpm

Any suggestions on which trim pot and which direction or is this a trial and error thing? I am relatively new to this and bought my unit rather than assembling it myself. It was just upgraded to add ignition control with a single coil. It originally was built without the ignition control section ...

Re: Spikes and erratic rpm

Also noticed the voltage varies quite a bit during the same erratic issue. I have the ecu in the trunk and combined all the grounds in to 2 14 gauge grounds directly to the battery. Is this enough grounds?
