switched it back to a VR and it fired first time,,,,,

I take it the crank sensor is a hall effect? What voltage are you using for it - 5v or 12v? Is D2 jumpered? Which hall effect sensor is it? Not all need a pull up resistor.
You should be able to see a hall effect sensor switching when cranking the engine by using a DVM set to DC volts.

I have the ms2 3.0 tuner studio v2.08
I have the crank sensor wired for hall, XG1 TO XG2,,OPTOIN TO TACHSELECT TSEL TO OPTOOUT,,,I have the pull-up resistor wired,
during cranking, I never get synced,,
should I have wired it for the vr? do the pot's r52 and r56 adjustments have a effect when wired ...
