I need another set of eyes on this...

Could you assist me with your expertise? I'm running an MSII on a V3.0 board to control fuel on a mildly warmed over 454 in a 1988 C1500.

Current tune is attached. Idles great - stumbles while accelerating - runs okay in cruise...take a look at the log (next post) and you'll see what i mean ...

Re: 454 BBC starts and idles - inconsistent tach signal

Matt, thank you for your support on this. All of the hardware seems to be working so, I'm going to go over my wiring again. Like most issues it's probably an "i-d-10-t" error.

Re: 454 BBC starts and idles - inconsistent tach signal

Matt,

I tried +15, +10, +5, 0, -5, -10, -15 always the same result. Also tried Rising Edge at each offset, then Rising edge plus Going Low (spark output) at each offset. Finally, Falling Edge with Going Low. Then I set everything back to the MK-HEI recommended settings. If I put an O Scope on the ...

Re: 454 BBC starts and idles - inconsistent tach signal

Thanks to all your guidance and support, I sorted out the tach signal issue and have the engine running nicely. So, I decided to upgrade the ignition to the 8 pin HEI for computer control of the timing. I made all the needed changes to the V3.0 board, added the MK-HEI kit from DIY Autotune and ...

Re: MSII settings for firing off the -side of coil

Thanks, that describes what I have now. I am updating to an 8 pin HEI to control timing with the MS-II. Also, updating to a wide band from 14point7. Hope to have it all changed by this weekend. More to come.

Mike

P.S. Thanks for all your advice and support.

Re: 454 Starts-Idles-Stumbles

Ken,

Taking signal from negative side of coil. I am switching to an 8 pin small cap so I can control timing with the MSII. Additionally, I am updating to the 14point7 wide band. I am sure I have not done everything possible to get a clean ignition signal but, I have done a lot - on the board and in ...

Re: MSII settings for firing off the -side of coil

Thanks for looking, see my responses below:
1) I have a wideband on the way and will install upon arrival;
2) I'll try adjusting next pulse tolerance first, if it's still noisy then in goes the zener diode;
3) I have one big ground wire from the engine through the firewall then all grounds attached ...

Re: MSII settings for firing off the -side of coil

Matt,

Thank you for the quick response. Attached is my datalog for a short drive through the neighborhood. I know you're a busy guy and if you have a moment to take a look, I'd appreciate your insights.

MSII settings for firing off the -side of coil

What MSII settings should I use in base ignition settings using the negative side of the coil for the tach signal? I'm running an old school 4 pin HEI. Found info on the 7/8 pin module HEI. unable to find setting info for the 4 pin HEI. Thanks!

Re: 454 Starts-Idles-Stumbles

Thank you for the advice on the WB - I have one on the way from 14point7. In the interim, I've been refining the tune and have it starting nicely, idling smoothly and I have been able to drive it a bit and zeroing in on the VE table. I'm still having trouble with the ignition signal though. Attached ...

Re: 454 Starts-Idles-Stumbles

Ken, thanks for the quick response. Yes, narrow band is correct. Seems like you are recommending the wide band. Could you help me understand why? What are the benefits?

Re: 454 Starts-Idles-Stumbles

I made it out to the shop today and attached is my current tune and a data log. It starts and runs and I can rev it a little thanks to the advice from kjones6039. The data log is from when I backed it out of the driveway and drove it around the cul de sac. Still seems a little lean. Going to beef up ...

Re: 454 BBC starts and idles - inconsistent tach signal

Starts and idles! Tach signal is now rock solid. Fixed eight things on the 3.0 board - jumpers and diodes and such, de-soldered and re-soldered - to set it up for tach signal from negative side of the coil. This was my first time ever modifying a PCB. Easier than I thought and I highly recommend a ...
