fidle solenoid

Post by monte85 »

hello what is the fidle solenoid? i have a gm tbi truck and i don't know if i need to add this or where it even connects to. i'm guessing that if i don't have it on my vehicle, then i don't need it. but i'd like to be sure. thanks

The FI solenoid is an on/off air valve to allow more air during start and warmup for higher idle speed. I can be an automatic one like this Image
described here http://www.megamanual.com/v22manual/mwire.htm#idle or one controlled by MS also described there.

Your TBI truck likely has a stock 4-wire idle stepper motor for idle control on the right-rear base of the TBI thottle body. Stepper motor control is possible with MS but is an advanced feature and I would recommend using a standard FIdle valve to get things going and then move to the stepper control when you're bored with everything working so well otherwise. :D

On a TBI truck I think I would either just clamp a breather filter on the FIdle valve or take air from the bottom of the filter housing (cut a hole and push a grommet in), then through the FIdle valve and into the front TBI vacuum cannister port. If you're still using the cannister then Tee in.

The valve would just sit on the manifold to be heated by the engine. If it takes too long to shut off, then wire +12v that's hot in run (you could tee off the fuel pump relay for example) to it and it will close faster - usually in 2 to 4 minutes. There are also various solenoid valves (usually cannister purge valves) that make good FIdle valves, but the Bosch one pictured is too easy.

I am fitting MS to my Honda Blackbird Bike engine with Honda throttle bodies, the bodies have a coolent heated waxstat fast idle arrangement, can i ignore the IACV bits on MS and just use the waxstat?

Ash - yes that's fine. MS doesn't care how or if you use programmed FIdle control; it's just there if you need it.
