MSD fuel pump....

Post by Plato2k5 »

I just noticed that it has a barb on the pressure side (fuel flows OUT) and that its casted into the pump housing, meaning you cannot take it off. How can a hose hold up to the 85+ psi this pump puts out?? I was going to hook it directly to a hard line, but this fitting will not allow me to do this.

help.....

Is this the part that you have ? :

If so, a barbed 5/16" fitting will accept a 5/16" fuel hose (make SURE its FI rated!), with a fuel hose clamp (don't use the crappy worm ones you would normally use for heater hoses, etc) This type of setup is used by OEM, so i wouldn't imagine it being a problem. If you wanted to, you could also hacksaw off the barbed part, and put on compression fittings. Some people feel better about using those. They can be found at jegs, summit...etc.

that is the pump. I'm just concerned about the line bursting??? What pressures can FI hose see with a FI clamp and not slip off??

This stuff, for instance, has a burst strength of 900PSI. Most of the stuff you buy at a autoparts store will have something similar. Again, MAKE SURE it's FI hose...if you just ask for fuel hose, they will sell you the carb-rated stuff. You don't want that.

As for holding? I double my clamps when i can. I did a motor swap, and ended up using all fuelhose/clamps, and haven't had any issues since then, while under ~45psi.

I ran that same pump for a while. Any auto parts store will have EFI-rated hose that slips over the barb and then to your hardline. Use the specific EFI-style hose clamps too.
