guys im totaly lost, i brought a megasquirt from turbobandit for my mercedes turbo. the guy who has wired it up has tried to start it before any updating has been done. the engine turns over but "blows" real bad as if the leads are on wrong.
i am frantic wondering if this will have damaged anything?
also, the disk that came with the setup has a megatune program on it but i cant get it to work, my computer has vista on it, will this matter/
lastly, the extra tuning manual on the disk is for megatune ms1 extra code, is this a mega squirt 1 ,2 or three? how do i tell?
any help will be greatly apprieciated, also anybody in the midlands derby/nottingham area of uk, i could really do with some help/advice as i am not able to understand this tuning by computer thing atall!

You NEED to start here, http://www.megamanual.com/mtabcon.htm do some reading, I know there is a lot to digest, But it will answer 99.99% of your questions. Start with the Megatune section and try to get comms, If you cant communicate with MS then there is no way you will be able to set it up and get it to run. Then kindly provide some more info, What board are you running, V2.2 or 3.0 or 3.57? Are you running MS1 or MS2? what code version? ( I know that you most likely dont know the answers to any of these questoin at the moment, but you will with a little reading on your part! ) Lastly, DO NOT try to start the motor without first getting the MS set up for your Engine! it is far too easy to damage things with the wrong settings.

thanx for your reply, i really dont know what vertion i have, is ms1 the board or the code? how does ms1 differ to ms2? i really feel like i will never know how to do this. do you think 2 or 3 minuets of cranking with the banging and farting that my friend experianced today tring to start the engine could have damaged it or the megasquirt or the injectors?

IMVHO I would say its very unlikely that any damage to the engine has occured. Damage to the injectors is unlikely as you/he never got it running. Lastly the MegaSquirt hardware, IF it was wired up right then there should be no damage to that either.
Installing MegaSquirt is not simply install it and drive away, you really need to read every thing 3 or 4 times and try to understand it. It will then take a good few weeks to get it running reasonably well. Then possably a few months to get it running really well. But then you'll have such a great sence of achivement!!!!!!!!!
If your really desperate for help i'm only an hour and a half or so down the M1 from you, unfortunatly i won't have time for a about 10 days going away. But i'm sure, if you have all the hardware, we can get it driveable in a weekend......

kinda have to agree, its doubtfull that you hurt anything, sieriously anyway, though it is easy to burn up a coil or coil driver if the settings are not correct. Dont panic, you ( like most ) will be able to get it running in short order if you take some time to do a bit of homework. Follow the link I posted, for starters read the " getting started " and " Megatune/setting up comms " sub directories, these are well writen and done in a way that is easy for just about everyone to understand. You dont have to be an electrical or engine tuning guru to use Megasquirt, just have to do a bit of homework, but that rule aplies to most all stand alone fuel injection systems. The MS was designed to be as flexible as possible, that just means that it has to be programmed for each individual aplication. for a quick guide, pull the lid off of the MS, if it is a green board, its the V2.2, If its blue is is the V3.0 board. either board will run the MS1 or MS2 prosessor, the processor is easy to find as it is the biggest component on the board, its either a black "Chip" about 2inches long ad .6 inches wide, ( MS1 ) or its a separate little PCB about 2.5inches by 1.5 inches with a few little black chips mounted to it, most likelly it is blue ( MS2 ) If your board has 3 connectgors, a 37 pin on one side and a 9 and 15 pin on the other, then you have a V3.57 board, but the processor will still be a MS1 ( smaller black ) or MS2 ( larger blue ) . All the boards function basically the same, The V3.0 & 3.57 are updated versions of the V2.2, Same with the processor, the MS2 is an upgraded version of MS1. At this point you need not wory about the diferances in any of them as any of them should run your car, but you do need to know witch processor you have, MS1 or MS2 so that you can get the MegaTune software to talk to it. Most users report that once they get the ignition trigger and cylender count and such programmed in that they can usually get it fired up on the base fuel map thats already in the MS. Just take it one step at a time, first try to get communication with the MS, read through the tuning manual a bit and feel free to keep asking questions. Joe

Do you mean that the program wont work? or simply that you cant get it to communicate with the MS?
If your computer has Vista it is unlikelly that it has a serial port ( a 9 pin "D" shaped connector ) most likelly it has a USB, in that case you will need a USB to serial adapter. If that is the case look here http://www.megasquirt.info/connect.htm

thanks for the replys guys, i am really a newby at this, iv found out that my kit is: It is Megasquirt I v3,0 EXTRA . this, so the vendor says is the best for wasted spark! i hope so, and wish i knew what the f**ki that ment!!
so, i'v got the usb to serial adaptor, i have a map from the vendor that was from a simerler car. big question, how do i know what map sensor i have, 225 300 or 400?
i hope to "burn" the ecu wiv this map tomorrow and mabe, just mabe the thing will just tick over for a second or two so i no that the last three years of findin parts and waitin for the next stage to come was not in vain!!
