edis no spark shows crank

Post by tlivingd »

I finally went to crank the car over today. however i think I have a ford EDIS problem.
I start cranking, megatune shows about 180 rpm or so for the first second of cranking. then it goes away.
if i try to crank from the key's run position i get no rpm signal showing in megatune.

If I cycle the power completely off then on again. I get the rpm up to about 180 again then it disappears after a second again.

anyone have any idea on fixing this?

this is using the most current version of the software on a MSII with version 3 main board.

Tanks,
Nate

Hi,

EDIS is sensitive to spark circuit resistance and /or very fouled-shorted plugs.

Make sure that you have at least 5 kOhms in each HTlead-spark plug. Use good quality resistor plugs,
they are usually 5 kOhms and/or resistor HT wire. :D

The internal circuitry in EDIS evaluates the spark current/voltage and shuts down if current is too high or voltage too low.

If it is not understood , it will not work!

Sounds like what mine was doing. I had the crank sensor wires reversed.

hmm.. I hope this isn't the problem as I'm running GM coil packs instead of the ford ones. (fit my project better)
. and plugs as they are brand spankin new taylor wires and ngk plugs.

I'll try flipping the sensor wires around, however the colors match blue for blue and grey for grey

It turned out that the module was good. After I connected all six spark plug wires and reversed the VR wires for the third time, it sparked. Now I don't know why it didn't spark when I reversed the wires last time but it did this time. Maybe because all of the plug wires were connected to the spark plugs? I doubt it. It's just one of those things where there were too many unknowns and I finally hit the right combo. ....and why would FORD connect the gray VR wire to the blue wire on the module and the blue to the gray????

It runs great now. I'm heading to the Bear Mountain, NY car show with it tonight.

tlivingd -
To get the polarity of the Vr sensor correct , try the instructions in this post:
viewtopic.php?f=38&t=31205&p=193873&hil ... ty#p193873
that should help to eliminate one problem.

I have a connector to the Vr that has grey positive & blue negative.
I have another connector to a different Vr that looks the same, but has blue as positive & grey as negative. => the colors of the wires do not give reliable information, it is probably better to make a quick measurement.

I had no idea the module did that, nice to know - thank you.

:yeah!: YEA!!!!! it fired the first time today!!!! however can't keep it running. BUT! it fired. and seems to be firing correctly. as all of the exhaust headers were getting hot and pretty evenly.

I needed to flip the wires around for the crank sensor. thankfully I know how to disassemble the factory ford plugs so blue is still blue and grey is still grey.

now who to talk to about getting this thing to keep running.......
