02 sensors on dual exhaust

Post by jerchap »

I want to put dual exhaust on a flathead v8 engine. With megasquirt, do you put an 02 sensor at the end of both exhaust header as well, or can you only use 1? If it is recommended to use 2, how do you wire that up to the megasquirt? I guess technically, the 02 mixture should be relatively similar on both sides of the engine though....

If going wideband, check the makers instructions for distance from the exhaust ports. It will have a short life if too close.

If the system has to be made, why not fit a balance pipe between the two just for the sensor? On my RV8, the two branches join at the back of the 'box, and that's where I've fitted the wideband sensor.

jerchap,

Millions of vehicles were produced in the 1980 with a single O2 sensor in one bank. The engines ran fine for the most part. Certainly MegaSquirt will work fine that way if the engine doesn't have other problems, my V8 has been running this way since 2002.

Stricter emissions requirements eventually led to 4 (or more) sensors being used (mostly to determine if any component had failed).
