Innovate, Bosch Wide Band O2 Sensor, Bung too deep?

Post by deadkenr »

I bought an Innovate Wide Band O2 sensor (w/gauge, module, etc...) last year. I am finally getting around to installing it and I noticed that the 'O2 Bung' is a 1" diameter cylinder that is a full 1" deep. When I test fitted the Bosch O2 sensor into it, I noticed that the O2 Sensor doesn't protrude past the end of the bung. Most O2 sensor bungs I have seen are only about 1/2" deep which would allow better flow past the sensor.

Should I leave the bung the 1" depth it is right now? (maybe it is meant to be this way for a reason?)

Should I just cut it down to about 3/4"?

Should I just buy a new O2 Sensor bung that is 1/2" deep?

-Thanks for any suggestions and help, Ken

It will work OK like that - it sounds like you have a bung that was designed for highly curved pipes and other places the regular one won't fit. You may get a slightly faster response with a shorter bung but I doubt you'd see any difference in the real world.

If it won't hurt anything, then I might as well use the chopsaw at work to take a 1/4" or more off of it.

That would let me use it (instead of buying a shorter one locally) and perhaps I would get a slightly faster response time. Even if it wouldn't make a 'real world' difference, if there is no down side, then I guess there is no reason for me to not cut it shorter.

-Thanks, Ken

Hello all:

I am just about to start my project with MS2. I will be welding in an O2 sensor bung. I am thinking of putting it in the header reducer just after the header collector. Is this spot acceptable? How deep should the sensor extend into the collector?

Thanks.

That should work, and it doesn't need to extend very far in.

Sounds like you have the extended bung, that's what I have also. That seems to be the one they are shipping these days. It works fine and doesn't restrict exhaust. Hook it up and start tuning! :D
