Ms on a VW mk2 golf 2.0l 16v, a few questions

Post by emery1990 »

Hi,

Im Toby from the Uk and have been looking into and doing a bit of research into Ms, im in a dilemma whether too build it myself and tune it or to pay close to £900 to get it built and tuned for me, obviously the tune and map on that ecu will be very good compared to mine, but i would like the challenge. Im not too worried about building it or wiring it up, that may confuse me but ill get over it.

When it comes to tuning is there like a guide that you can use to get your car running at first and then ways to maximise it, or is quite easy to pick up after having a little play around and research. I am expecting the tuning side of it too be VERY hard and confusing.

I am thinking of maybe calibrating it myself with a decent base map then take it too a tuning house for them to maximise it etc.

is it worth reading the whole of the megamanual at the minute, ive been told that its more for fault finding and won't teach me much on how to get the ms working and maxing it out?

Sorry for the essay, i am nood as you can tell!

Hi Toby

There's a fair bit of info on these conversions on ClubGTI.com as a few of the members have done them - have a look.

The easiest way to convert the engine (assume it's using Kjet at the minute?) is to use the hardware from an ABF engine code such as injectors/manifolds/fuel rail/throttle body. One of the guys has a Mk1 golf with an ABF on MS1, and has a verified 175bhp/164lbft on a standard engine.

Hope that helps.

Hi mike, i am on cgti atm, been speaking to toyotech a bit, think im irritating him though as i havn't been clear in whether im getting him to build and map it yet! And also spoke to trev 16v as he done it all himself after a lot of hardwork

Ive bought the abf gear you mention a little while ago, just thinking whether to bite the bullet and do it myself or pay £800 to get it all sorted to a very good standard!

Been reading on about autotune, i understand ill need a wideband sensor anyway, and that autotune can tune most of it for you, but it can be a bit dodgy if not fully understood

Whats the worst that can happen, i blow my engine :D

I have some pretty good fuel/spark maps from a stock ABF I tuned on msruns.com that would be a good starting point if you're nervous about doing it yourself.

The ecu will come with a basic map that will make my car run, i am getting built by another person as it didn't work out much more expensive. What i can do is either pay £500 to get it running perfect with my engine from professional mappers, or do it myself via auto tune then maybe just tweak it once i get more confident, instead of having my car sitting around for ages whilst i learn about it. Is auto tune very simple to use, I'd get a wideband sensor so that i can auto tune the whole lot.

Plus would a abf map work on my 9a?

How do people rate the auto tune and its ease of use? would it get the best out of my ecu or would that require dyno and a professional?

The spark table is where the real power is, and there's no such thing as a reliable auto-tune method for dialing that in.

Could i use pauls_vr6 abf tables on my 9a as a starting point, or did you/he read it wrong thinking i had a 9a? Would be great if i could though.

9A and ABF are very similar in tune.
