Question re advance on pulley not showing

Post by panel »

Hi guys........I just got a hold of a timing gun to set up my trigger offset. Looks like I had to put in 21 in the little box so the timing gun and the big box both show a 10degree at idle. Before this it was idleing at 21 on the timing gun when I thought it was at 10. :?

My question right now is.........as I blip the throttle I can't see any advance showing up on the pulley. I have a white mark at TDC,10 and 20 and this doesn't move while blipping. You can rev it up to 2000+ and it's really steady! For some reason though it's not rock solid/super steady at idle and does a little fluctuating/hunting. Could be fuel tuning though.

Shouldn't I be able to see this move on the pulley as the RPM increases?

panel,

Yes, it should definitely move, if your spark table isn't full of 10's of course!

Do you get a tach signal (does the rpm should in the tuning software?)? If not then you need to check the continuity from:
- DB37 pin #24 to the EDIS PIP pin (#1),
- DB37 pin #24 to TACHSELECT jumper,
- TACHSELECT jumper to OPTOIN jumper (i.e. check this jumper at both ends),
- OPTOOUT to MS-II header pin #14 (where it sticks through the MS-II card).

These should all be less than 1 Ohm.

If you are showing rpms, then the problem could be because the EDIS setting isn't selected ('Coil Charging Scheme' should be 'EDIS', ), or because the SAW output signal itself is absent or weak. If the setting is correct then assuming this is a V3 board I would check the continuity from:

- SAW pin (#3) on the EDIS module to MS-II's DB37 pin #36 (check from each end of the wiring),
- DB37 pin #36 to the IGN jumper,
- the IGN jumper to JS10 jumper (i.e. check this jumper at both ends),
- JS10 to MS-II header pin (where it sticks through the MS-II card).

All of these should be less than 1 Ohm.

Let us know what you find.

Lance.

It's a V2.2 board. It does show a RPM and advance in the tuning software. This is why I never really checked to see if it was mechanically working at the motor.

I'll check back tonight when I get home and report back.

Looks like it was set to 'standard coil charge' I looked back at lots of old MSQ's that I had and they're all the same. Can it even run like this properly?

panel,

As Jamie from Mythbusters would say, "there's your problem!"

I think if you use the standard coil charge on EDIS, it is probably mostly ignored (because it's probably not in a 'sensible' range for the EDIS module). I think that's why your engine ran - it was on limp mode all the time.

It should run *much* better now!

I'll report back in the morning after a trip into work and see what she does with some advance etc.

Runs great now :yeah!:

I was even able to put the 'trigger offset' back to read '0'. I just probably never thought to check that setting after my swap from MS-I to MS-II or something.

Thanks Lance.
