MSII on Volvo 2.3L AQ131 Penta

Post by AKMBB »

I'm thinking about adding a MSII fuel injection system to my Volvo Penta 2.3L carbureted boat engine. I can take most of the parts directly off of a Volvo automobile and put them on my boat motor but the O2 sensor would be difficult if not impossible to add to my water jacketed exhaust manifold. The MSII manual says that an O2 sensor is recommended but not required. Besides optimizing fuel efficiency what would I be sacrificing by leaving the O2 sensor out? My goal is not to make the boat faster or more efficient but rather to make it easier to start when cold. These engines run strong but with the extraordinarily simple carburetor, they don't run well until the engine is warm. What other issues should I consider before jumping into this project?

Personally, I would stick with a carb and investigate adding a simple choke.
I'm also not sure WHERE you'd mount the megasquirt controller (since it'd be either in the hot engine area OR in the boat and subject to water).

Also, you REALLY want reliability on a boat so adding complexity might not be a good thing.

I am considering this also, but not to make it start easier, I want to add an Eaton M62 blower to it after working the bugs out of the megasquirt. How hard is it to tune without an O2 sensor?

Take a look at page 17 in this Holley Marine TBI manual, looks like they dont care too much if the O2 is only looking at one cylinder. I could do this on the B230 manifold I believe.
