2.0L Duratec wasted spark ignition coil wiring

Post by atm92484 »

Hello - first time poster here.

I have been wanting to build a Megasquirt for awhile but car hobby time has been occupied by other projects. The time has finally come for me to take the plunge. I have been considering a MS2 for my 2.0 Duratec powered Locost but am not entirely certain about the ignition wiring. I would like to use the factory COP system since I already have them. I have measured the resistance of each oil at between 0.8 and 0.9 ohms (sorry I am not able to measure the inductance number - I know it would likely help).

Based on DIY Auto Tune's website, the BIP373 is capable of handling approximately 11.5A normally. If I wire one coil to one igniter, I = V/R = 12V/0.8 ohms = 15A and I exceed the manufacturer's specs however if I wire two coils in series I get I = 12V/(2 * 0.8 ohms) = 7.5A.

Is this commonly done with Megasquirts? The reason I ask is that I have wired FSAE cars using PE ECU's before and this is how they configure their ignition system to prevent damage to the igniters but I have seen no mention of a similar practice in the MS community.

Thanks,

I would use one coil per ignitor. BIP373s are pretty hard to damage - we tried just about everything, including hooking one to a 12 volt 60 amp power supply directly and wiring its input to a 5 volt source. The only thing we've seen damage a BIP373 was reversing its wires.
