no spark

Post by shaper »

I am using a ford edis system with my subagon conversion msII. On the edis wiring diagram, it shows what looks like a 25uf
capacitor hooked up to the switched 12v lead of the #8 pin to coil to ground. Is this a capacitor I am looking at and how does this set up operate? There is also a 100 ohm resister with a jumper on the V3 board. If this isn't configured yet, would this also
cause no spark to generate? Please help, shaper.

The EDIS system should operate with no connection to the MS. It goes to a 'limp home' mode of 10 degrees BTDC, if you've set up the trigger correctly. Of course MS won't inject without a tach feed from EDIS.

The capacitor is to cut down on the electrical noise from the coil. It should still work with the capacitor left off, but the MS may have more problems with resets and electrical noise. This would not cause a no-spark condition.

Thankyou for your response. From what I've read, there should have voltage readings on the ground wire also. Is this the ground from pin #9 on the module or the ground from the coil? I am using the stock subaru coil which has a 4 pin connector.
Would another type of coil be a better choice?

It would be better to use an EDIS module with a Ford coil as they're known to work together OK. Do you know if this coil has an internal ignitor or not?

Yes this coil has an internal igniter.

That's not likely to work with the EDIS module unless you design some sort of adapter circuit.

I'm in the UK and imported a used EDIS 8 set complete from the US as 8 cylinder Fords etc ain't common here. It came with two coil packs.
To save money I made up plug leads after sourcing used ones from scrap yards for the connectors, and all the UK Fords I saw used the same coil pack as the US ones I had.

I bought a ford coil on ebay and am now getting a spark when cranking. Thankyou for the priceless advice as I have been clueless for a long time as to why this thing did not work. Need to do a little more before getting this car up and running.
