Blue screen problem

For discussing Phil Tobin's TunerStudio MS is the MegaSquirt edition of TunerStudio, a next generation tuning application. It provides the ability to configure and tune all MegaSquirt controllers and is 100% compatible with MegaTune ini files and msq's.

Blue screen problem

Post by 93white3400z »

Hello,

I was trying TunerStudioMS in the car for the first time today and I faced a little problem. I was adjusting Cranking pulse width and while I was writing in the textbox, I got a blue screen and my computer rebooted. After it rebooted, I opened TunerStudioMS again and clicked on cranking settings in the toolbar, and as soon as I did, blue screen again. So I switched to Megatune and got the job done  But I really want to use TunerStudioMS instead and I would really like to help fix this issue. I attached the logfile so I hope that will help.

Also, I found some line in the log that looks like this: "10-03-15 21:04:36 :Debug: couldn't get value for 1.02541E Filling with 0.0, formula: 8.44350 + ( 222.0 * ( 1.02541E-02 + 222.0 * ( 1.92111E-04 + 222.0 * ( -1.38363E-06 + 222.0 * 4.42977E-09)))) ". I'm not sure if thats bad or what, what value it couldn't find exactly ?

And I have a feeling the crash could be related to the array index out of bounds:

Exception in thread "Thread-71" java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: -1

I will do everything I can to help fix this issue if you (Phil) need further info.

There is a buggy prolific usb cable driver out there that seems to cause this... Check here for more info to fix it:

Thanks Phil, I just tried with that file for the driver and now both TunerStudioMS and Megatune can't connect at all. I rolled back the change and its connecting but it will probably crash again. I guess I will have to get a better cable.

that is the sure fire approach, a different cable.

Interesting that there is more to it that the driver alone, it seems as the driver doesn't handle some potential conflict. Because the driver does work in many cases... I have only had 1 computer that I was finally able to make crash with the bad driver, but then it was consistent and the BSOD was complaining of a IRQ error.

I have same problem with Rotronic's adapter. I tried the older driver found from Tuner Studio site. With older driver no communication. Is there any other possibility, than buy a new adapter? If I have to buy a new one, how I can know what adapter will work?

I wonder why that driver is not working? Did the file replace OK?
You can also try the new driver at:
http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?id=31

That driver is supposed to fix a BSOD problem according to the release notes, but I had a couple people say it worked and a couple say it didn't so I put the old driver back on my site.

For a good shot with a new cable, find one that has an FTDI chip. That is the same chip used on the MS3. I just bought one of those off ebay for $13 and it works good.

Hate to bring this up again....BUT..I need help. Please. I have been trying to figure this out all day with no luck, and the only replacement cable I've found locally is $60. Hoping I can sort this out with the cable I have.

I have just started trying to use Tuner studio and get the BSOD. I have gone to the TS faq site, downloaded and used the uninstaller program, downloaded and installed the new driver from prolific from the link, but am having no luck getting the new driver to work. Followed the directions to the 'T', several times, just in case.

The hardware is an IOGEAR GUC 232A USB-SERIAL cable. It shows up in the 'hardware' in Device Manager, but says it's not installed properly.
So, I go to the "USB-Serial Controller Properties" window which shows 'Unknown driver' and driver properties says no driver installed.......

If I clic on 're-install drivers' - 'browse' and browse for it in the 'program' folder....it's not there..?? However if I go through the 'add/remove programs' in 'control panel' it is there....Also get a window saying it can't find a ser2pl.sys file.....

I've been trying all day to figure this out, tried as many ways as I could to get this to work. The program is there, and the cable shows up, but the two aren't connecting for some reason.......Any Tips??

Thanks
Daryl

I had an XP computer that wasn't playing nice trying to get it to install the new drivers in the FAQ. You are using the current FAQ, right? As Prolific did finally put out drivers that really fix this.

Also I Lance found even with the old drivers if he changed a compatibility mode setting, then put it back that fixed it too.

The safest bet is always to get an FTDI cable, those shouldn't cost $60 by any means.

Thanks Phil,
I found a local supplier for the FTDI adapter, under $20. Plug and play, no drivers to load. So far works great. The biggest problem is that I have yet to see an adapter that has the chipset/driver labelled, and even the computer geeks at the retail outlets don't know what I'm talking about when I ask, and have no access to the info without cracking the package to try it.
The adapter I bought looks exactly like the one DIYAuto sells.....I took a chance and it worked out.

I'll still try to figure out the Prolific driver (driver dated May 24th, 2011 iirc), but I'm no computer wiz so it might take a bit. I will try to find the files to use the computer installer rather than the installer program it downloads with.............

Cheers
