ddl,

The fuel doesn't need to go into an open valve. The fuel will just sit there (getting better vaporization) until the valve does open. In fact, with conventional injectors that are appropriately sized, it is not possible to inject entirely into an open valve, even if you wanted to do it. See #10 here: http://www.megamanual.com/common.htm

ddl,

Probably, but you haven't given us enough information to judge, really. It looks like it might be a variable reluctance sensor, but there's a chance it might be a Hall effect sensor. Ether should work. See this for more details on sensors:

http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/pickups.htm#hall

The other part of the equation is what sort of wheel the sensor is 'pointed at'. If it is a missing tooth wheel, it will need to have a number of consecutive missing teeth. See: http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/wheel.htm

Most M20s would have a 60-2 crank wheel, which is pretty easy to use with MS. We've found that putting a 10K resistor in line between the positive terminal and the MS2's input pin can help with noise issues on these cars.
