Water injection nozzle before or after IAT

I want to get an accurate picture of IAT but am worried there will be issue of water getting on an open element IAT. Should I put IAT before or after injection nozzles. Thanks.

Put the water injection nozzle before the IAT. I try to have it 6-8 inches before too so it gets a better picture of the temp drop introduced by the water injection. I have not seen an increase in IAT failures on any of the water injected cars I have owned or played with. If your still concerned, toss another IAT into your glovebox. Cheap insurance it won't fail on you!

My water injector is before the sensor. I went through two open-element IATs in just a few months after I installed my water injection. I switched to a solid-element one and have had no further failures.

What was the failure mode of the open-element sensors? Hopefully not pieces falling out of them!

I think one of those aircooled VW engines could vibrate ANYTHING apart....

They just quit working. All of a sudden, they'd only read -40F. Yeah, I suppose it could have been vibration but the failures happened too quickly after installing my water injection for it to be unrelated.

Sounds like a fracture of the exposed wire leading to the thermistor bead leading to an open and resultant railed low. Do you still have any of the failed sensors? I'm curious as to whether the bead came out - I have a project in build right now that will be heavily dependent on water injection except it will probably not be at all tolerant of solids in the intake. The rotaries aren't known for tolerating foreign object debris. Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Mike,
Bill Shurvinton's first failure was exactly that, the thermistor bead vibrated off the wires and went through the motor. Good thing rotaries are tough, eh?
