I am getting ready to fire up my twin turbo 414 inch SBC for the first time and I remember reading somewhere on line or in the manual (but I can't find it now) that the initial values and cold start maps are already loaded into MS and are for a aspirated V8 SBC. If this is correct I am wondering how close the cold start setup is, even though I am boosted and I realize I will have to tune the VE and so forth I am just curious as to whether or not my engine will start right up and idle. Any help is appreciated.

Yeah Thanks, I have read them a couple of times and I know I am in for a duanting task of tuning this thing, I was just curious as to how close the cold start stuff would be. My buddies' car has a FAST system on it and tuning the cold start was a bear.

If you have set the constants in Megatune 2.25 the engine should run the first time.

Great, Thanks Ollie. That is what I was hoping to hear.

To tune cold start, I take it one day at a time. I open MT and look at what the temps are, then crank. If it doesn't start, I up the cranking pw a few milliseconds, then recrank. If it starts, I leave it until the next day and reevaluate it then.

If it starts and dies, I up the afterstart enrichment around that temp a few bits.

If it starts and stays running, but is leaner than I'd like (leaner than 14:1) I'll up the warmup enrichment around those temps.

Starting with a running car, I think it took me about a week to get good consistent cold starts. Now that the nighttime temps have dropped into the 20's I follow the same procedure as above, but at the lower temps on the maps.

The trick is to not add too much at once... small changes in the cold start are best. Big changes get you flooded.

I think that your advice is absolutely on topic and correct. The cold start settings are quite variable from one engine to another, even if they're both SBCs for example. Modifying settings for effect and analyzing the logs is very important in all areas of your maps. It really doesn't take that long to home in on good settings but you do have to be patient. Remember, "perfect" is the enemy of "really good".
