Megatune Crashing After 3-5 seconds when car is on

Post by bigamil »

So here's whats going on. I'm helping a friend set up a megasquirt 2 on a big block. We got everything working using the stimulator. Now both the computer and the megasquirt are both installed in the car. When I launch Megasquirt/Megatunix both applications work for about 4-6 seconds showing all the proper read outs on my screen but then it totally locks up. I'm connecting to the megasquirt with one of the DIY serial to usb adapters and i'm running about 2 feet of db9 cable from the megasquirt to the pc. Anyone have any ideas on why its crashing?

Note: I also hooked up my other laptop and it did the exact same thing when i launch megatune/megatunix.

It's pretty common. Noise in the system disrupts the serial channel or USB converter. Unplugging the converter from the PC will often let megatune recover then you can plug the converter back in. But it will probably just repeat.

Try improving the grounds, make sure power wiring is adequate gauge. You might also try adding a couple clip-on ferrite chokes to the USB and serial cables. You can pick them up at Radio Shack.
