vr sensor questions

I'm working on setting up to use two vr sensors - one on a 36-1 crank wheel, the other on a one-tooth distributor. As I'm setting this up I've come across a couple questions.

-First, on the crank trigger - my crank pulley is about 6" deep, and the actual belts rest about 3" in front of the crank, so rather than mounting a solid wheel to the front I wanted to mount a ring to the back side. As it turns out, a place in the UK makes a ring that's almost exactly the diameter of the main body of my pulley, so I ordered on and have it in hand now. The ring slides over the body perfectly, and comes to rest against the back side of the actual "pulley" part of the pulley. The problem is, the outer diameter of that part of the pulley happens to be almost exactly the outer diameter of the ring. So, if you're looking from the front of the pulley, the ring is entirely hidden... Well, that's going to look nice and all, but what about function? My pulley is aluminum, so I'm guessing it would still work OK - is that correct? Or will the aluminum pulley interfere with the vr sensor reading? I can get some pictures if my description is lacking or confusing.

-Second, for the distributor. I want to convert my existing distributor to a single-tooth pulse for cam orientation in relation to crank. Since the distributor has an 8-tooth wheel and vr sensor built in, it seemed like the easiest way to get it working would be to simply remove 7 of the teeth from the wheel and lock out advance (both of which are easy to do). I know I would only be able to use the trailing edge of the tooth) since the leading edge would have a imprecise 0 crossing), but other than that it should work fine, right? (I don't need to make a wheel with a half-circumference tooth, do I)?

Thanks for any advice!

The VR sensor won't "see" the aluminum, so you should be OK there.

Yes, your plan with the distributor is workable. You didn't say what code version you are using, but most of them allow a lot of tolerance on the location of the cam sensor pulse when used with a missing tooth wheel.

Right now I'm using ms-1 extra, but I won't be using it with this configuration - I'm building up in prep for ms-3 :)
