coolant temp sensor location

does it matter were i place it in the negine?
looking at putting it the cold water return pipe?

yes it matters, and no the cold water return is not a good place.
you want it somewhere near the thermostat.

What are you squirting?
If you have a throttle body injection system, and if coolant runs through it, put the sensor close to that.

My install did not have a good place to drill and tap the thermo housing, etc. A CLT sensor adapter was placed in the top hose (immediately post-thermostat). This worked very well except for warmup when the thermostat would stay completely closed until the block coolant was 160F or so. Since the sensor is in the outflow of the thermostat, it wasn't accurately measuring block coolant temp. A 1/4" hole was drilled in the thermostat plate to allow a small amount of block coolant to enter the top hose and be sensed. This works very well and warmup is not noticeably longer. The adapters are typically Al and come drilled and tapped for the GM sensor.
