Suggest an ignition system for me.

Several years ago I Megasquirted a Mitsubishi 4g63t engine using MsnS extra code. I learned a lot and had good success for the most part. I had problems with the ignition. I cooked some coil packs and burnt out some vb921s.

I am now preparing to Megasquirt another engine. It has no electronics on it at all, so I am free to do what I want.

Based on what I have read about it, I really like the ford Edis. It powers and controls itself completely, with the Megasquirt only sending a timing advance signal.

I have two questions. First, is there a version of Megasquirt that will allow you to enable the multiple spark discharged that is built into the Edis?

The second question. What other factory ignition systems are there that are as self contained and bullet proof as the Edis?

Thank you for you replies.

Some versions can enable EDIS multispark if your module supports this. How many cylinders does this have, what RPM do you need, and how much boost will you be running?

4 cylinders, 3000 RPM max and no boost. It is possible I will turbo charge it in the future. Even then, it wouldn't be boosted over 5 pounds and probably just normalized.

I'm surprised more people haven't chimed in. Doesn't any other car manufacturer have their own version of EDIS? Or at least a module that handles ignitor and dwell duties on its own.

I'm trying to stay away from let Megasquirt do it all because that's where I had problems with it in my Eclipse. I would burn out vb921's or burn out coil packs. I wanted a matched(coil pack, ignitor) proven system.

I have also been reading about the GM ls1 and ls2 coils.

Am I correct in saying that they have built in ignitors, and they limit the maximum dwell but don't actually control it?

Are they uncookable with a Megasquirt?

The only other system that remotely resembled EDIS was the GM DIS. It uses a weird 7 tooth crank trigger. Either one could work.

You can use LSx coils with the MegaSquirt with the right mods - they don't work with EDIS or GM DIS modules, though. And it is possible to cook one if you dwell it for too long.

Someone posted a link to a video where the guy had ls1 coils set up and he was changing the dwell and scoping it. Can someone please post a link.
