Can a tip3055 be used as a temporary replacement for an ignition coil driver?

I wouldn't think so. It would probably die very, very quickly. Get a BIP373 from your favorite MS vendor and never worry about ignition drive again. The ignition drive chips are much more than a simple transistor switch - Google "ignition IGBT" for more info on one popular method of ignition switching.

The maximum flyback spikes these allow is 70 volts; most ignition coils can put out several hundred volts of flyback when they fire. I wouldn't expect the TIP3055 to survive long.
