Single tooth ignition

Post by msiddalingaiah »

I suspect this has been asked before, but I couldn't think of the right search terms.
I didn't see it in the MegaManual, but I could have missed it.

Has anyone run spark with only one pulse per crank revolution rather than a multi-toothed wheel?
I assume MS will work with only one tooth.
I suspect the spark advance won't be as accurate as a 32 tooth wheel, but how bad is it?
My bike has a single "tooth" pickup and the stock CDI uses that for spark and advance.
My guess is that it won't be any worse that stock, which is good thing.

Practical experience with this setup would be greatly appreciated.

m,

MegaSquirt requires at least one 'tach signal' per ignition event. The tach signal can be a a crank wheel tooth, spike from a coil, etc.

So for a 4 cylinder, 4-stroke engine, that's two tach signals per crank revolution. For an eight cylinder, you need 4. For a two cylinder, you only need one.

Is there a significant advantage with a multi-tooth wheel?

It's able to update engine position data more often, making it more accurate if the engine RPM changes abruptly.
