Has anyone tried to used a stock low pressure mechanical fuel pump to feed remote sump tank that feeds a high pressure pump?

I tried something similar on my first MS project (79 Corvette tpi conversion). Since the car had no in-tank pump, I used the stock pump to lift the fuel to a surge tank and then on to the inline fi pump located near the engine.
It worked, but only so-so. I was trying to avoid building a new fuel system with the proper sized lines etc. Not a great idea for sure.
In my current project I moved the inline pump to a location near the fuel tank, re-plumbed the entire system including the return line and it works great.
IMHO.............. Take the time to do it right and avoid the headaches!
Just my 2 cents worth.

I use a low pressure electric fuel pump to feed my "swirlpot" that, in turn, feeds my high pressure pump. I've also used a mechanical fuel pump in replacement of the electric pump in a similar fashion, but with TB injection. Works fine so far.
