Advance problem

Post by 205205 »

Hi, I have a Peugeot 205 running MS2 with 60-2 ignition control.
The problem is that it produces double the amount of advance it should for a given RPM.
You can set the advance right at idle then as the revs increase the actual advance increases at double what is showing on the screen.
Tacho reads correctly and settings have been checked and are OK.
Any ideas?
Thanks Graham

Could you please post a copy of your MSQ? It could be a wrong setting.

Try upgrading to 2.891 and see if that makes a difference.

OK, tried the later firmware but with no luck.
We tested the system by adjusting the trigger offset to make the stated timing and actual timing the same at idle.
We then brought the revs up to 2500 and the actual advance increased by 10 degrees more than that stated on the screen.
At this point we gave up and refitted the stand alone distributor based ignition, car is now running very well but as you can imagine I would like to sort out this mystery especially as the next one I do is a later 16 valve with no option for a distributor.
Matt, thanks for the advice so far.

What sort of ignition module are you using?

A very simple one, supplied by Jaycar.
Just a transistor and associated components.

There's a pretty big noise filter on the input side if I'm reading that right - it's a little blurry. Try adjusting the spark latency setting.

Thanks for the suggestion Matt. May take me a while though as its running perfectly with the standalone distributor ignition and the tuning shop is pretty expensive.
May be more positive test to simply remove the ignition module and drive the coil direct from the MS2 driver output.
I only used the remote driver to try and reduce interference/misfires, made no difference in that area though!
Hopefully I'll get back with more information before too long.

Car still going well so haven't got around to any more testing but it has been suggested to me if the CAS connection was the wrong way round that may cause this problem?
