Pulled my distibutor tonight found that the center of the cap where the coil wire passes through was burnt rather badly with evidence of spark scatter. The entire inside of the cap had a white dusting. Wondering what i might look at to prevent this from happening again.

When i had this happen, I also had a poor connection at the coil - corrosion between the centre terminal and the HT king lead. Could also be the wrong plug leads or plug gaps.

I did burn a pair of plugs 2 weeks ago while i was at the track. Had to drive home on them. Normal gap for me is .035. Taylor leads all ohmed out correctly. Ill check the coil wire and all its connections. Hopefully i pick up some time on the intake swap.

I don't know what the deatails of your ignition setup, so this may not apply but burning the cap and rotor is a common problem when a high output coil is used. The factory center terminal is a carbon base and it can/will get hot with high output coils. Msd makes a center button that will eliminate this from happening again. http://www.jegs.com/i/MSD+Ignition/121/8412/10002/-1

Im running the Gm remote mount hei. Stock coil Msd cap and rotor. Msd replaced the cap after I complained about it lasting less than 6 months. :yeah!: Distributor had a failing vr sensor in it as well. The center button is awesome on big cap hei. I believe Ive got it sorted out alot better than before but im gonna swap to edis when the motor comes out. :RTFM:
