Problems with serial port

Have a MS2 V3 which is working - but won't communicate with TS. This is using my workshop desktop with a true serial port. If I remove the daughter board, short pins 12&13, and use TS mini terminal set to ASCII, I get a response, but not what I type. And If I try to get TS to identify the code it finds Com1 but again shows odd characters.
Same with HyperTerminal. It's rather like it's using the wrong character set.
I've checked the voltages round U6 including the onboard generated +/- supply, and they seem ok.
I have tried simply loading new code but again it reports an error.
Port Checker says
9600 baud
"s" ing 's'
115200 baud
"u" ing 's'
(where 'u' is actually the symbol for micro as in microfarad)
