Need Help Choosing Ignition System
I've spent all evening reading the Megamanual FAQ on ignition. I'm finding myself overwhelmed with information and new terminology. I plan to keep researching on my own, but was hoping to hear what others think is the proper ignition setup.
I'm converting a 69 Ford 289 that will eventually go in my boat project. I picked up a early 90s port injected intake manifold I plan to use with the the MS-II. I do not have any ignition components. I need help deciding which ignition setup would be most practical.
From what I've read I think I want to stick with a marine distributor due to the likely chance of fuel vapors under the engine hatch. But I'm concerned performance and efficiency will be affected due to lack of vaccum advance on these distributors.
I really like the idea of direct ignition coil control, but not sure it is a option?
Second was the HEI module with the coil under the cap, but not sure it is a viable option due to lack of marine certification and clearance between the distributor and intake manifold.
Lastly was the Ford TFI, but have read they over heat in some cases.

Yes, but crossed it off for two reasons, the first being my engine would have a hole where the distributor would be. Second the cost, I believe EDIS to be relatively expensive. Please enlighten me if I am wrong. If that is the case I will look into edis again.kjones6039 wrote:Have you considered EDIS? Very simple reliable and robust system.

Why the hole? You can leave the dizzy in place or you can do what I did on my SBC. I took the HEI dizzy to the machine shop and cut the top off. The dizzy is now about 3" tall now and is only used to drive the oil pump. As soon as I can find a pic I will post it. (I love the extra room too!)david martin wrote:Yes, but crossed it off for two reasons, the first being my engine would have a hole where the distributor would be. Expensive?? You can buy used EDIS systems on the internet for ~$120 all day long. (both coils, EDIS module, pig tails, 36-1 wheel included) Of course you could also run EDIS coils, in wasted spark, directly from MS for even less.
