How lean mixture do I dare to set on Megasquirted straight 6

I did MegaSquirt my 280SL-85 (m110) a year ago, both fuel and ignition and the engine runs better then ever before. I have installed a Wide band lambda and gauge which MS use to hit the AFR Target.
My question is how lean I can set the AFR on my engine depending on it's character. I have no knowledge of how compression, stroke, bore etc affects the fuel mixture. I know there is engines running as lean as 16 up to 25???, not old MB engines though.
As it is now I lay at AFR 12.5 at WOT and 15-15.5 at cruizing. It feels like I could leaner the mixture more since there is no knocking/pinging or hesitation.
Just do it you think... well... I don't wont to challenge... at least I need to know how I can detect if the mixture is to lean before there is holes in my pistons.
How lean is usually recommended on stock motors?
Has anyone any thoughts around this to share with me...
