i am trying to confirm timing on a 87 porsche with twin plug edis setup. i read tou cant use a dial back light due to the wasted spark, however it is working only it seems to be "doubled" the car is fixed at 10 deg tet the light dial is showing 20 deg. am i to assume i am right on as the signal is doubled? thanks

Generally EDIS users use non-dialback lights for the reason you have pointed out. The same goes for other wasted spark systems.

FWIW... Been there, done that.......

When I got my dial back light with inductive clamp I gave my old one to my brother. After going EDIS, my dial back light no longer worked. Asked for the old one back - I don't think my brother actually used it as he had problems finding it. :D But eventually did. It is what was known as a power strobe (needs connection to battery) so not the very earliest type which was just a neon and difficult to see. You remove the plug lead and insert a brass rod which the light lead clips on to. Works fine with EDIS.

My dial back light (Krypton) doesn't do anything with EDIS. Tried the inductive coupling both ways round. I could understand it not showing an accurate spark - but why nothing?

Hi Dave,

I am well familiar with this type and if I had one it is certainly the one I would use! As it stands, I have 2 very cheap (Harbor Freight) inductive clamp type lights. One is a dial back type and the other is not. Interestingly enough, both of them worked when I was running EDIS and still work with my current MS controlled wasted spark setup. That being said, I still prefer the non dial back light.

I can't think of any good reason why your Krypton won't work, notwithstanding the dial back. It seems to me that it should at least fire the strobe regardless of accuracy, which I think is the big issue with dial back use on wasted spark.

Bottom line..... My advice to the OP stands......

Wish I could answer your question though........ :(
