Starter Input?

Post by nemiro »

I have a MSII v3.0 board installed in a 1962 Triumph TR-3. We have the car running, and tuned halfway decently. The problem I have is at startup. The engine cranks several times before I see any activity on the LEDs. This is a very predictable amount of cranking, almost like it takes so many turns before the ECU recognizes that the engine it actually turning. Once I see activity on the LEDs, the engine fires up almost immediately.

I am using a 36-1 trigger wheel, and we have adjusted the hall effect sensor (custom sliding bracket) for a 0.0 degree offset. Like I said, once it starts, it runs pretty decently, but it takes more cranking than it seems like it should. I was wondering if there is an input anywhere on the DB37 connector to take in a signal from the starter relay to tell the unit that I am pushing the starter button? If not, can anyone take a look at my .msq file, and see if I have things setup incorrectly, which would lead to this? For configuration, this is a 121ci 4 cylinder, 4 stroke engine. I am running a single coil through a distributor, one injector per cylinder. Also running the GM style AIS, not that that should impact this.

Thanks for any help!

How long after starting to crank to get get sync? This would show if it is a trigger problem. A log when starting might help.

MS knows when you are cranking by the tach signal. It will obviously be at lower rpm than when idling.

I would say it turns over 8-10 times before it gets a sync. Once running, it seems fine. The number of cranks seems to be consistent. Makes no difference if it is hot or cold. I will record a log while starting this afternoon.

I attached a screen shot of the advanced ignition settings. I set the skip teeth to 18, since this is a 4 cylinder. However, if I set that to 9, implying an 8 cylinder, the number of cranks until sync get cut exactly in half. Of course it doesn't seem to run right there, either, but it starts a lot faster. Not sure if this helps in the diagnosis.

Forgot to mention that this system is on the 2.886 code right now. I do plan to bring it up to the ms2extra_3.2.4_release firmware this evening.

OK. Have not made the change yet, and after reading a bit, not sure this is what I should do, anyway.
