What are the correct settings for these. I am using a 36-1 trigger wheel and Hall effect crankshaft position sensor from DIYAutoTune. Since there are no magnets on the trigger wheel I would call the sensor a VR sensor.
The engine runs with them set at 0.0 ms and 50%. The MS 2 documentation calls for 0.2 ms and 10% when using a VR sensor.
I would like to clear up which sensor I really have and also which settings to use.

Both hall effect and VR can work on plain steel. Neither must have magnets as such.

The difference in practice is a VR sensor being a simple coil produces a near sine wave output which varies in amplitude as well as frequency. A hall effect has built in electronics which produces a square wave of constant amplitude. The VR sensor is passive - the hall effect requires a power supply to function.

This means the electronics reading the sensor must be more sophisticated for a VR type. MS has two different input circuits. The VR one can be regarded as universal, and adapted to work with near any sensor. The opto is for a more regular input signal and will work with hall effect or coil, etc.

<Ob pedantic> The Hall sensor MUST have a magnet present. A 'pure' Hall sensor typically detects one or more flying magnets on the rotating part, and will be completely oblivious to a normal trigger wheel. A gear tooth sensor, which is the device typically used these days especially by the DIY crowd, has a magnet built into the sensor itself and so doesn't require an external magnet.

As for the exact settings, the engine wants what the engine wants. The settings in the manual are typical values and a good place to start, but if you aren't sure, don't be afraid to experiment. It's like going to the optometrist - "Is this better? How about this?"

Absolutely. However, the hall effect sensor that DIYAutoTune sell is of the gear tooth sensor type which has the magnet built in.
