proper location for iat sensor

Post by monte85 »

hello again. my newest question is this. is there a specific place i should mount the iat sensor? obviously in the intake air stream, but should it be away from the engine to avoid heat or is anywhere okay. i have a gm tbi truck with the round aircleaner. it does have duct hose that runs to the core support. i was thinking i could weld a bung to the bottom of the aircleaner outside of the filter, but it would get hot when the engine heats up possibly negating the sensor readings. thanks.

On the TBI truck I'm doing right now, I just punched a hole in the duct inlet on the rad support. The sensor I used was a clip-in type but any would work. Most of the earlier GM EFI cars placed the IAT away from the engine in the ducting near the outside air entry point - and still do.

FWIW,

I used an open style (though closed would work in this app) that just pushes in and has a clip on the inside. Just whack a 5/8" hole and poke it in. A walk through the boneyard looking at intake boxes yields some interesting sensors. :D
