Having some issues with a MSPNP 9093 install on my Miata

Post by epikeddie »

Hi,

I'm new to MS and have experienced quite a bit of a hiccup during the install. Once I got everything to communicated through Megatune, I tried to go ahead and follow the instructions and lock the timing at 10 degree BTDC. The only problem was, the car wouldn't hold idle long enough for me to do this. Even after the car warmed up, the car would barely idle.

So I go into Megatune under the Spark Settings and try to change the setting under a fixed angle of 10 degrees BTDC. The value of the crank trigger angle was 65 degrees, if I move the value a couple degrees in either direction......the car would start bogging heavily and just die. The car was running EXTREMELY RICH at this point as I can just smell the fuel everywhere. So now I'm a little puzzled on how to lock the timing if I can't even get the car to idle consistently.

These are the modifcations I have on my car:

'93 Long Nose Crank 1.6L DOHC 4-cylinder engine
Integral Stage 2 Cams - 254 degrees duration both intake/exhaust cam at .360" (9.14mm) of cam lift
Stock Pistons
Mild Port & Polish to remove some of the casting marks and deburr- no backcuts or major valve grinds
Stock 1.6L Airbox
Aftermarket 4-2-1 Header
RSR Exmag GTII exhaust w/ stock catalytic converter (2.4" Piping)

I was wondering.....due to my mods, would the base map on the MSPNP 9093 setup not be sufficient to idle my car? Is there a particular setting I should look into?

Thanks in advance,
Eddie

With a built motor, it's likely to require some tuning. I'd get the timing set first - even if you give it some throttle, the timing won't move if you have it locked out like the install guide recommends. Then nurse the engine along till it warms up and get the VE table dialed in at idle. Subsequent starts should be easier once you have done this. This one's going to eventually need some dyno tuning given the mods it has.
