MSII Beginner toyota 4afe ignition?

Post by pennysr5 »

i am planning on turbocharging my 90 corolla sr5.i bought a MSII V3. to deal with tuning, however,i am an extreme beginner and am in need of guidance.my initial questions are, will the MSII work with toyota integrated ignition assembly and, will the stock computer still handle functions that the MS does not,for example,fan,a/c,etc. in other words will MS and stock computer work in conjunction. i am a machinist for a major company with access to mechanical engineers so i have all my mechanical issues worked out. i am in need of serious help.i am also new to the forum scene. please help.

Hi,

This one works a lot like our MR2. Check out this write-up we have on the MR2 setup:

http://www.DIYAutoTune.com/tech_article ... ta_mr2.htm

The only differences are (1) the stock harness pinout is a bit different if you're making an adapter harness, and (2) this one has a PWM IAC valve. You can replace the stock ECU with Megasquirt completely. Going by the wiring diagrams on Alldata, it looks like the stock ECU doesn't control either the fans or the A/C on this car.

sorry for the delayed reply, forum admin. blacklisted my computer for contamination reasons.hopefully i fixed this problem. i am still studying the ms2 assembly manual and toyota manufacturers repair manuals.i am still trying to see if this integrated ignition assembly will work or do i need a different ign. set-up.the mr2 system appears different than the one on my car.

sorry ,computer problems again.i do not know the details about mr2 oem ignition, however i do know that my distibutor has two signal rotors, one for crank position and one for cam position.also has electronic spark advance. i think the difference is between vast and IIA ignition systems. mine does not seem to be as simple as some others.trying to figure out more about this system and weather or not i can use it with ms2.i should mention that this is my first ever automotive project so if i seem stupid its because i am.....(edit) just viewed old thread(4age MS2) mine is similar to this ,definitely ESA. my question is in the beginning of ms2 assembly should i install for vr circuit and what are the details i should be paying attention to .

The MR2 has two sensors as well, but the MS only needs one of them. Take a look inside the distributor and see how many teeth are on each of the two trigger wheels. If you have a four tooth wheel and a one tooth wheel, you're good to go. If you have anything else, let me know...

i looked at the distributor 3 days ago. one wheel had four teeth and the other had many teeth of which i did not count, however i looked at the parts diagram in the manual and counted 24 teeth. does this sound typical? if not i'll count the teeth as soon as i get the chance and i'll let you know.

Ok, that's a bit of a different critter from the MR2 system. In this case I recommend using the VR conditioner to read the 4 tooth wheel and firing the coil directly from a BIP373 internal ignitor.
