vortec distributor??
I plan on running the newest version of MSII.
I have a 1995 LT1 that has been bore'd, stroked and is turboed. Now I want to change over the ignition setup. I am retrofitting on a SBC Single plane intake and plan on stuffing a 1996? MSD vortec distributor (off the pickup trucks) Now I dont know much about it other then it is a 3 wire distributor. Everywhere I look it seems that the ign module is seperate and the coil.
Now with this dizzy do I have to run a crank trigger? I am trying to stay away from this option as it gets pricey and I do drive the car on the street alot.
Currently the motor runs on obd1 pcm with the Opti and doesnt have a crank sensor at all (only 96-97 did)
My friend runs this distributor on his 8 second 6 speed camaro, but runs a FAST setup. Also runs a 7al2 box and a red HVC2 coil. He also has a crank sensor so I need to find out why.
Would I be better off going with a different dizzy? Anyone recommend one I can drop in that doesnt require a seperate crank trigger? Maybe even one that has a ing module and coil already in it?
This setup is in my 1987 Iroc with a T6 74mm Garrett, dyno'd 583RWHP on 8psi pump gas! on the stock pcm setup.
Thanks for any help.

Re: vortec distributor??
Is it is a conventional distributor driving a conventional ignition setup? Ie self contained?jay_rich wrote:Okay here is what I have going on.

I has this on my Rover V-8 and this is what I did.
Lock up the centrifugal advance mechanism.. Tips on how to do this in the MegaManual. The MegaSquirt can map the ignition far more accurately. And it already has a MAP sensor.
As regards the trigger it really depends on your distributor. Mine had a VR sensor with the electronics for that bolted to the outside of the distributor. So I first removed those electronics and fed the VR sensor direct to the MS. That worked quite well - bit I've now changed to a hall effect one which I glued to the VR sensor baseplate. This gives a more reliable trigger than the VR one. A suitable sensor is the Allegro ATS682 which only cost a few dollars from Digi-Key.
It's probably not quite so good as going to an EDIS setup or whatever - but a damn sight cheaper and much better than the old mechanical system.

Re: vortec distributor??
Run the 92 5.7. It's been done plenty of times and will be an easy solution

Re: vortec distributor??
This is a 383 lt1 that will be running 15-20psi. I just don’t wanna toss away 300 bucks on the msd-8366 and it not control it right or something.
